Now is the time to bring awareness to how student enrollment numbers can skew meal program eligibility & the need for a change.
At Mystic Rhoads Productions (MRP), we advocate for the core securities that every community wants for its children:
- Consistent access to quality education & supportive mentors.
- Resources to support good nutrition & physical activity.
- Local environments that are safe, sustainable, & caring.
Through our long-standing relationship with Roper Elementary School in Lincoln, Nebraska, we have seen firsthand the positive impact that a focus on these three areas has on students, staff, and families. However, we are also acutely aware of the critical food insecurity needs at Roper that are not being met due to the eligibility criteria for the school district’s free and reduced-price meal program. We applaud the USDA for providing free and reduced-price meals to 18 other elementary schools in the Lincoln area. However, the eligibility process leaves high-enrollment schools like Roper in a difficult position. Despite having many food-insecure students, Roper does not qualify for the same level of meal support.
Today, we’re asking for two things from you — as a fellow community member and an informed steward for future generations:
- Share this information with others and support MRP’s goal to swiftly bridge the gap.
- Read on to understand more about food insecurity and what is keeping Roper Elementary School from feeding food insecure students.
Taking Action for Change
Food insecurity is a growing concern at Roper Elementary, and the current eligibility criteria for meal programs are not enough to address the needs of all students. By raising awareness and working together, we can help ensure that every child at Roper has access to the nutritious meals they deserve, allowing them to thrive in school and beyond.
Percentage-based funding is bad for our school.
